Chapter Fourteen

(Giada)

My heart was beating in my throat, my entire body pumping at an erratic rhythm.

I’m kissing Gabe. And I boldly suggested it!

Of course, I’d said it in a half-joking manner so that he could back out if he wasn’t keen.

But he hadn’t. His arms had snaked around my waist, holding me firmly. Not that I needed any encouragement to mold myself to him.

I was mesmerized by how his mouth claimed mine with raw desire yet gentle tenderness. Jolts of electricity coursed through me, and my insides quivered.

He was such a good kisser … and such a perfect man.

I took a deep breath, and his scent enveloped me. It was all I’d dreamed about throughout my entire adolescence and most of my adult years. It was finally happening. And was so much better than my fantasies.

My happiness would’ve been complete, if not for one thought that niggled at the back of my mind. I tried to ignore it, to focus on how soft Gabe’s hair felt, how heavenly he smelled, how soft his lips were.

But the disturbing idea came back like a boomerang each time I pushed it away.

Why was Gabriel kissing me now? What had changed?

Are you nuts? Gabe has finally noticed you. It doesn’t matter why, how, or how long. Enjoy the moment.

It would be so much easier to listen to the irresponsible voice of my inner woman. The one only concentrating on pleasure. But my other half, the more responsible, worrying, eternal romantic, the one who had true and deep feelings for Gabe, didn’t let go.

Was it my dress? Maybe I should’ve worn more casual clothes instead of playing femme fatale for a simple dinner. I might’ve given Gabe the wrong impression.

Was it just physical attraction for him? Or was he blowing off steam after our stressful conversation earlier?

Gabe’s fingers teased my neck, hauling me back to reality. The shivers cascading down my skin made me dizzy.

To heck with these preoccupations. I’ll see where things go. Right now, they’re on a fantastic course.

“Oh, mon Dieu. What a coincidence! It’s Gabriel and Giada.”

The unpleasant voice was all too familiar.

Could it be…?

I pulled away from Gabe and looked around. I snapped my head in the direction of the voice and froze.

How could this be? How did Aurélie find us?

She stood not far from us with one arm looped around Jean-Pierre’s elbow. Gabe’s cousin’s eyes were fixed on the sky, his mouth pulled into a grimace. He looked like a tiger in the circus ring. Angry and at unease.

Aurélie, on the other hand, was smiling brightly at us. “Isn’t it magnifique? I’m so happy to bump into you. We were just strolling through this street searching for Cours Mirabeau.”

Gabe, who’d been standing like a statue since I broke the kiss, flinched. “It’s that way.” He pointed in the direction from which they’d come.

I snuck a glance at him. His lips looked swollen, and his hair was slightly disheveled. Just enough to make him look extra-hot. I would’ve loved to ignore Aurélie and Jean-Pierre and continue where we’d left off.
